Rabbi Heidi Hoover began her work with Temple as Rabbinic Intern in 2006, initiating such well-received and popular programming as Shalom Shabbat (our Friday morning Shabbat observance for young children and parents/caregivers), our Saturday morning adult Torah study, the Interfaith Adult Workshops, and more. Rabbi Hoover has been profiled in the New York Times and frequently speaks on the topics of Jewish identity, interfaith issues and the relationship of the Jewish people to modern Germany.
Rabbi Hoover leads all of our worship services and works with our B'nai Mitzvah candidates and our confirmation students. She is a proud alumna of the Academy for Jewish Religion in Riverdale, NY and Gratz College; she received smicha (ordination) and her Master's degree in Jewish Studies in May of 2011. For the 2010/2011 academic year, Rabbi Hoover was a Rabbis Without Borders fellow at CLAL, the Jewish center for learning and leadership. In July of 2011, she began her full-time service as rabbi of our temple; her formal installation will be on January 28, 2012. Rabbi Hoover lives in Brooklyn with her family.
Cantor Nonie Schuster Donato returned to our congregation in 2007. Nonie is an accomplished Baroque soloist who also conducts various childrens' choruses, including P.S. 193, The Gil Hodges School. Our congregation has been blessed by the collaboration of our own member, the renowned musician and talented teacher Michael Tornick. Along with Cantor Nonie, Michael brings outstanding musical acumen to TBE services and special events. Family services and special holiday events have been enhanced enormously by this fortunate venture.
Rabbi Emeritus William Kloner led Temple for over thirty years, from 1974 to 2010. His background as a decorated chaplain in the US Navy, ministering worldwide, and his distinguished academic credentials have been a blessed resource to this congregation as well as community and city. His path from Brown to Columbia, through the Mediterranean (not to mention Governor's Island) and eventually to Brooklyn gave him valuable experience and depth of knowledge. His warm presence and his ability to relate with compassion and caring to each congregant helped sustain Temple to the present day. Sadly, Rabbi Kloner's accidental injury in the summer of 2010 led to his retirement from the pulpit. Our community continues to pray Misheberach for Rabbi Kloner, wishing him a complete recovery of body, mind and spirit.
Cantor Emeritus Eugene Green (z'l) led us in song and prayer for over a decade. As an opera star, graphic artist and set designer, his talent enriched our liturgy. He was an honored member of the clerical team and a cherished presence at TBE. Cantor Green's death in May of 2011 represents a deep loss to the congregation; we mourn him along with his wife and family.
